5th: Brent Chapman

Brent Chapman likewise spent his time in Beeswax and likewise threw a rattlebait. But as the tournament progressed he switched to an XCalibur One Knocker, then to a Rapala DT6.

With the Beeswax fish so pressured, his thought process was to first use a loud rattelbait, then a bait with a more subdued rattle, then a bait with no rattle at all. "The fish had so many rattling things going by them I wanted something more subtle," he said. "I caught all my fish the last day on that DT6." Complete Story

Let's talk about crankbaits. I won't be recommending any particular make, model, size or color of lure. Rather we'll talk about how to find a lure that'll catch bass where you fish, and how to avoid wasting money on those that don't.

For most recreational or casual tournament anglers, the issue is catching bass. It isn't about catching the biggest one in the lake or setting a new club record. It's about spending a day on the water, catching a few, having a good time and then reliving the experience with friends and family later. Complete Story

Classic Day 2

BassFan.com - Brent Chapman camped in Beeswax for the second straight day. He gained two spots in the standings despite a bag that was nearly 5 pounds lighter, but his margin from the lead also increased to nearly 11 pounds.

"It was nothing too exciting, but I'll take it," he said. "I lost one that looked like a 3-pounder.

"Tomorrow I'm just going to go fish and go have fun and do the things I need to do to catch a big bag of fish. I might have to switch things up a little bit."

He got seven bites today and weighed in his first spotted bass. He's relied primarily on a rattlebait thus far, but plans to do some flipping tomorrow.

"They didn't bite as good today. The boat traffic was going to be my excuse, but I can't use that when I look at (the smaller sacks that came from) other parts of the lake." Complete Story

Classic Day 3
Chapman imploded on day 2, but had a good enough day today in Beeswax to salvage a 5th-place finish.

"I feel good about it, considering how my day went yesterday," he said. "You can't have a day like that and expect to win, unless you had some kind of miracle. That's what I went out and hoped for and it didn't happen."

About whether he's surprised that VanDam could catch 51-plus-pounds this week, he said: "It's not a surprise. It's just frustrating, I guess you could say. It seems like every time I make the Top 6 that guy's always in there. That's how it goes though. He deserves it. He's amazing." Complete Story

Classic Day 1

BassFan.com - After a mediocre practice, the 12 keepers that Chapman worked through to compile his bag left him surprised. There were no big bites, though.

“I'm on solid fish, but that’s what is really separating me from the rest of the guys at the top,” he said, referring to his lack of a solid kicker.

His bag consisted entirely of largemouths.

“From a winning standpoint, I'm glad to know that I'm catching the largemouth and I'm on that type of pattern because that’s what will ultimately win this deal.”

He noted that he fished within sight of Kriet and VanDam. Most of his fish came courtesy of shallow-running and lipless crankbaits, but he added that a flipping stick will be on his deck for the rest of the tournament due to the warming conditions. Complete Story
